Carolé is a Clinical Diabetes Specialist, CDE and is currently a private consultant, recently retiring from the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. Her professional career focus has been in Nursing, Diabetes Education. Volunteer activities include the American Diabetes Association and American Association of Diabetes Educators on both local and national levels. Carolé is the past recipient of the AADE Distinguished Service award, editor of the Art and Science reference book (3rd Edition), past President, Health Care and Education, American Diabetes Association, and past Chair of the ADA Education Recognition Program. She currently sits on the NCBDE Board. Her career has placed a high emphasis on advancing one’s knowledge of educational strategies, teaching learning concepts, and group education as a powerful delivery option.

Hope Warshaw has been a dietitian and diabetes educator for nearly forty years. She currently operates a consulting practice, Hope Warshaw Associates, LLC, based in Asheville, North Carolina. Her work today spans from corporate consulting to freelance writing and individual diabetes education and weight management. Hope has authored numerous books published by American Diabetes Association including Diabetes Meal Planning Made Easy and Eat Out Eat Well – The Guide to Eating Healthy in Any Restaurant. She also writes the Nutrition Q&A column in The Washington Post. Hope is a sought after speaker who regularly presents at association meetings, nutrition and diabetes symposiums, and online webinars. Hope demonstrates her leadership capabilities in volunteer positions for Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics dietetic practice groups and American Association of Diabetes Educators. She is 2016 Past President of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Jaime A. Davidson

MD, FACP, MACE

Dr. Davidson is a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, division of Endocrinology and a Council member for the Texas Department of Health Services. He is also the president of WorldWIDE Diabetes a not-for profit diabetes international medical education entity. Dr. Davidson was one of the charter members in the formation of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He chaired the Diabetes Guidelines in 2001 and the initial road map for the prevention and treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. He has served as a Trustee of the American College of Endocrinology, as member of the Texas Diabetes Council Professional Committee for the Texas Department of Health, a member of the Council on Obesity Diabetes Education, the International Diabetes Federation Task Force on Epidemiology, and the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. He served in higher education as a Regent for Midwestern State University, Texas and as a Committee Member of the National Academies, Institute of Medicine’s Identifying Priority Areas for Quality Improvement.

James Bennett

James is a Certified Diabetes Educator and is the Director of Clinical Services at James Bennett Apothecary, a progressive community pharmacy founded in 1975. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Diabetes Educators and held various committee positions. James is the Director and Lead Instructor for the EMPOWER Diabetes Self-management Training Program at James Bennett Apothecary, an American Diabetes Association Recognized Program. He serves on the faculty of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy as a Clinical Instructor and is Director of the Community Pharmacy Residency Program at James Bennett Apothecary, which became Mississippi’s first Community Pharmacy Residency site in 1997. He currently accepts PharmD Residents interested in pursuing advanced credentials in diabetes management. His facility is designated as an Advanced Community Practice Site because of their unique emphasis on disease management in the community pharmacy setting. He is actively engaged in managing diabetes, working in collaborative practice agreements with physicians and nurse practitioners in his area. James Bennett Apothecary was featured in The Wall Street Journal® cover story concerning disease management in the community pharmacy setting. He has authored numerous articles on diabetes related issues and is a frequent speaker at the national level.

Jeremy Pettus's image

Jeremy Pettus

MD

Dr. Pettus is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes himself at the age of 15, Dr. Pettus has dedicated his career toward treating and educating others with the disease. In addition to his clinical work at UCSD, Dr. Pettus is also involved in basic immunology research with a focus on cure based therapies. He is very involved with the not-for-profit organization Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD). With this organization, Dr. Pettus speaks at patient-centered conferences around the country and heads the conference's Type 1 Diabetes track. He also co-created the WeAreOneDiabetes.org website with Dr. Steve Edelman, which brings together diabetes professionals with type 1 diabetes. Through TCOYD and WeAreOne, Dr. Pettus hopes to spread the message of patient empowerment through education.

Jerry is Founder, Owner and Director of Clinical Services at Plaza Pharmacy and Wellness Center, Gainesville, Texas, the first freestanding clinical pharmacy in the country with a diabetes program Recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Jerry is a Pharmacist and Certified Diabetes Educator who speaks frequently in national and international settings on the subject of diabetes and clinician/patient behavior in the health care setting. He has written numerous articles on diabetes care, behavior change and medication use in the people with diabetes. In 2001, Jerry became the first practicing community pharmacist to be elected to the Board of Directors for the American Association of Diabetes Educators and to serve on their Executive Board in the position of Vice President. Currently, Jerry serves on numerous advisory boards, speaker’s bureaus and key opinion leader boards for various healthcare and pharmaceutical companies as well as serving on the editorial advisory board for American Association of Diabetes Educators in Practice Journal.

John is Director, Behavioral Health Services for Joslin Diabetes Center and Lecturer in Psychiatry for Harvard Medical School. Since 1982, his clinical work, research and teaching have focused on the behavioral and psychological aspects of chronic illness, specifically diabetes. At the present time, John is interested in developing sustainable, cutting edge models of behavioral health care that can be integrated in a cost effective way with comprehensive diabetes care and extended to primary care practice. His current research interests include developing tools to prevent hypoglycemia and methods to increase adherence with medical recommendations.

Dr. Frías, a native of Chile, is President and CEO of National Research Institute, Los Angeles, CA and served 5 years as a General Medical Officer in the US Navy. Dr. Frías has held leadership positions in Clinical and Medical Affairs at Eli Lilly, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, Tethys Bioscience, and Johnson & Johnson, where he served as Chief Medical Officer and Global Vice President of Clinical and Medical Affairs, Diabetes Care. Dr. Frías has held academic positions at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, and the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, where he is currently on the clinical faculty. He is also active in the non-profit organization Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD), where he lectures at the organization’s Latino Initiative patient conferences and provides continuing medical education for healthcare providers. Dr. Moritsugu is the former Vice President for Global Professional Education and Strategic Relations for Johnson & Johnson’s Diabetes Solutions Companies, and former Worldwide Chairman of the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institutes, a global initiative to provide awareness and training in state-of-the-art science, information, and technology relevant to diabetes prevention, awareness, diagnosis, and treatment. Rear Admiral Kenneth Moritsugu was the Acting Surgeon General of the United States in 2002 and again from July 2006 until his retirement from the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) in September 2007. As Acting Surgeon General, he served as the nation’s top doctor, communicating the best available science and information to the American people to help protect, promote, and advance their health and safety. He was also the operational commander of the 6,500 Commissioned Corps health professionals. A career officer in the USPHS for 37 years, he served as the Deputy Surgeon General of the United States. Dr. Moritsugu is an Adjunct Professor of Global Health at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Dr. Kelly is President of Kelly Diabetes Associates, LLC. He was formerly an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Missouri, School of Medicine in Kansas City. His responsibilities included Director of the Metabolic Support Service at Truman Medical Center, President of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ACCP Research Institute. He joined LifeScan, Inc. in 1992, where his responsibilities included Director of Professional & Government Affairs, and Director, Diabetes Programs. He was founding Director of the Johnson &Johnson Diabetes Institute for North America, and served in that position until March, 2009. Dr. Kelly’s research and experience includes a number of publications, participation on editorial boards and review panels of several journals, and various committees of professional organizations. He currently serves as a consultant to several companies on issues related to diabetes care and marketing strategy. In addition, he also serves as faculty for Children with Diabetes and serves on the Board of the College Diabetes Network

Korey K. Hood

Korey K. Hood, PhD works closely with people with diabetes in clinical, research, and advocacy settings. Dr. Hood is a clinical psychologist and researcher at Stanford University, where he is a Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. At Stanford, he directs National Institutes of Health and foundation-funded research projects and provides clinical care aimed at promoting health and quality of life outcomes. Much of this work focuses on building positive coping and problem-solving skills to prevent diabetes distress and depression, and increasing the uptake of diabetes technologies and social media. He is the past chair of the Behavioral Medicine and Psychology Interest Group of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), is on editorial boards for Diabetes Care and the Journal of Pediatric Psychology, and assists with programming for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Children with Diabetes events. In addition to publishing over 70 scientific articles, Dr. Hood is the author of Type 1 Teens: A Guide to Managing Your Life with Diabetes and a co-author of ADA’s Teens with Diabetes: A Clinician’s Guide.

Dr. Laffel is Chief of the Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Section at the Joslin Clinic, a Senior Investigator in the Section on Genetics and Epidemiology at the Joslin Diabetes Center, as well as a Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Under Dr. Laffel’s leadership, the pediatric program at Joslin has quadrupled in size and is recognized worldwide as a major pediatric diabetes center for clinical care and research. She has been the Principal Investigator and Program Director of Joslin’s National Institutes of Health-funded postdoctoral fellowship and early career development training grants for pediatric endocrinologists entering the field of diabetes research. An active researcher in the field of behavioral diabetes, Dr. Polonsky has served on the editorial boards of Diabetes Care, Diabetes Forecast, Clinical Diabetes, Diabetes Self-Management and Diabetes Health.
